March Madness has been in full swing the last few weeks, but the madness at SHA is about to shift from the hardwood to the track. The Sacred Heart Boy's and Girl's Track teams began official spring practices earlier this month, and soon will be competing and striving for yet another outdoor track state title. Last year, the Irish ran like mad and were able to secure another title for the Academy. The Sacred Heart Track Squads have been securing some many "dubs" ("dub" is intended to sound like "W" the first letter in "Win") that you would think it's a game of Fortnite. I've never actually played Fortnite, but it's sweeping the nation and has millions of players online. There are two things that Sacred Heart and Fortnite have in common: they're popular, and a lot of winning happens! Stay tuned as the Sacred Heart Track Teams get ready to drop Titled and get their 2018 seasons started!

Spring is in the Air!

As all of the Winter sports have come to an end, the fresh air of Spring is surrounding! With that being said, let's wrap this week up on a high note for Spring Break starting on Friday. 💮 Most of you have realized already, however why not say it again? - your Los Lobos marketing team are CMU Chippewas. As Chippewas, we have to give a shout out to our Women's Basketball team, who just made it to the NCAA's March Madness 2018 Tournament - Sweet 16! Tune in on Saturday to support fellow Mt. Pleasant citizens! Let's see who gets the dub as CMU plays Oregon for the Elite Eight spot. The women's team for both our Chippewas and your Irish have had amazing seasons, thus far. Coming in hot, as they advance through the brackets! None the less, so proud to say I've had the opportunity to work with both teams and I'm positive knowing that everyone around us agrees with that statement. WE ARE SO PROUD! Congratulations on an amazing season, Girl's Basketball t...

Congrats on a great season!

The boys basketball team has had huge success this season! Their 18-5 record before the playoffs was enough to get them entered in the Class D State Basketball Championship Tournament. The first game was against Onekawa  high school, who had a similar record of 16-5 before the first round tournament game. This game took place March 12th and oh was it a close one till the Irish pull away with a 55-43 victory! In the second round the boys had a lot more worthy opponent, having to deal with  Buckley  high. The bears had an impressive regular season record of 16-5 before entering this tournament, which lead to issues for the Irish. The Bears were just too dominate with a 66-44 victory over the Irish. The Irish being eliminated doesn't overshadow the great amount of success these boys put together. Lets all thank the seniors who will move on to great things! Go Irish!

Welcome to the SHA Family

Dan Haggart Basketball has been the focus of the blog the past couple of weeks so today we are going to switch gears and get to know the SHA Athletic Director! Dan Haggart holds the title of Athletic Director and Dean of Students at Sacred Heart.  Haggart is not a stranger to SHA ... he has SHA in his genes. His mother, Betty Grisdale Haggart, was a graduate in the class of 1953.  Dan Haggart has grown up in Clare, MI and graduated from Clare High School. After high school, he attended Northwood University for four years to play football. After graduating in 1986 from Northwood, he played semi-pro football for 10 years.  After his football career was over he went back to college at Saginaw Valley to get his teaching certificate. With his new education and a little experience under his belt, he returned to Clare as their new Athletic Director in 2013 before taking the position here at SHA.  Dan Haggart is a great asset to the SHA family! The Final Push to Victory

Image
This week, the Sacred Heart girl's basketball team will look to put the finishing touch on their season, with a state championship victory at the end of this week. T he Lady Irish will do battle with Fruitport Calvary Christian at Big Rapids Crossroads.  The Lady Irish have battle hard all season, and they are on the verge of completing another State Championship season. 2014 was the last year in which the Lady Irisih were able to secure the State Title. Per an article in The Detroit News:  Sacred Heart has played during the final week of the postseason the last five years, including a state championship in 2014, then losing to eventual state champion Pittsford at the Breslin Center in 2016. Games are scheduled for the 15th & 17th of March, so buckle up and get ready for the final push to victory! Go Irish!

Boys basketball continues to impress!

Sacred Heart has a knack for winning when it comes to their basketball program this season! The girls team is still the talk of their conference with their amazing 24-0 record. the boys team has been on a tear though with a 7 game win streak according to  maxpreps . The boys haven't been blowing out teams by 30 plus points like the girls, but a win is a win and it shows that the boys can win under pressure. This is a very special moment for the Sacred Heart program having such dominate basketball presense in the state of Michigan! The boys team had their District Semi-Finals this past Wednesday the 7th versus Baldwin. Yes, their wining trend continued with a great 65-56 victory leading them to the District Finals! Their  next game is being held today at 7 in Big Rapids, Michigan. Their opponent, the Crossroads Charter Academy who has struggled for the most part this season with a 7-14 record according to maxpreps . This isn't the District Finals game, but this should be a ...

Picture   The SHA Varsity Girls are headed to the Regional Semi-Final! We have continued to cover their success over the season and making that hard work count as they fight to be #1 in the Region.  To get to the semi-final game the Irish got the " W " over McBain Northern Michigan Christian last Friday. The game was one of their closest with a win by nine points. The game got the Irish one game closer to the Regional Title.  The Regional Semi-Final Game is tomorrow  at 6pm! The game is at the Cross Roads Academy in Big Rapids .  The Irish are looking to expand win streak and keep their undefeated season. With a tough game last Friday, the girls are looking for your support as they take on the Onekama Portagers. Take a road trip to support your favorite girls team in the Region and Country!  Being able to follow these girls as they continue to find success as a team with each opponent they face has been so much fun. Sacred Heart: Why Sports Matter

Image
As the winter sports regular seasons wind-down and playoffs begin, and as our college semester reaches the half-way point and spring break approaches, I would like to take a moment and reflect upon the experience of covering Sacred Heart Irish Athletics. I can confidently say that it has been a great pleasure and privilege to follow the Irish and to engage with the Sacred Heart community this year.  So far, both basketball teams have performed at high levels, and I cannot wait to see how far they make it in the playoffs. Track and baseball approach, two sports that I played growing up. I was never any good at baseball, so I stopped after the 8th grade (and then started Track my freshman year of high school). Being able to watch and follow as the student-athletes of Sacred Heart Academy achieve and surpass their goals has reiterated the importance that sport has, and has reaffirmed my desire to work in the sport industry. I've long held that sports has a special way of uniting p...
